The Assessors Main Responsibilities Essay Assess the learner’s knowledge, understanding, skills and competence against the criteria set by the awarding body. The assessor must at all times display a fair and professional manner. High standards must be maintained and a thorough understanding of the standards and criteria each learner is working towards is needed. To plan and undertake assessments using the appropriate assessment methods for example, observation, questioning, discussion, recognising prior learning or examining work products. It is important to apply holistic assessment whenever the opportunity arises. All methods of assessment to be used must be agreed upon and understood by the learner. A thorough initial assessment of each learner must be done to ensure any special requirements can be met. It is important to be aware of learners targets and completion dates and work closely with teachers and tutors to ensure continuous progress is achieved. The assessor must support, guide and encourage learners through the assessment process and judge the competence of their work and recognise when a learner is ready for assessment. The assessor must ensure the assessment experience is a positive one for each learner, whether it has a formative or summative outcome. During assessment all VACSR (valid authentic current specific realistic) points must be followed to ensure all judgements and decisions are fair and correct. The assessor must promote equal opportunities at all times and take into account the individual needs and requirements of the learner. Every learner should be given an equal chance to succeed. After the assessment decision has been made constructive feedback must be given and any further planning and action that may be necessary must be agreed. The assessor must keep accurate and up to date assessment records so the learner can clearly understand and keep track of their progress and achievements. It is  important for the assessor to understand the value of reflective practice and continuous professional development (CPD). The assessor must undertake and provide proof of a minimum of 10 hours, 30 hours if a full time assessor of good quality CPD per year and be fully aware of current standardisation methods and procedures. To uphold their assessor status, the assessor will also be required to attend standardisation meetings and be observed carrying out assessment twice a year by the internal quality assurer (IQA). This ensures they are maintaining standards and have a full understanding of the criteria and may occasionally be observed by the external quality assurer (EQA) thus ensuring standards and quality are maintained at all times. The IQA will support any needs they feel the assessor may have. An up to date knowledge of centre policies and procedures for example, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity and be able to deal with appeals and disputes is also required.

A Complete Cleopatra In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare comments, â€Å"What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other word would smell as sweet† (2.1.85-86). A word can have many meanings depending on a person’s perspective. Cleopatra is a â€Å"rose† that has been depicted under many names. Throughout history numerous authors have sought to depict her character and their differing opinions have made her name one which resounds in very different ways. The Roman historian Plutarch created Cleopatra the political manipulator; John Dryden illustrated Cleopatra the ultimate sexual woman; George Bernard Shaw offered Cleopatra the uneducated impetuous young child-queen; and, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote of Cleopatra the martyr of love. The character of Cleopatra presented by Shakespeare is a complex combination of each of these traits and is thus the most memorable and meaningful depiction. The Cleopatra that emerges from Plutarch’s writing is a manipulative and scheming political woman who dominates both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. In his Roman Lives, Plutarch offers a biased historical account of Mark Anthony with frequent references to Cleopatra. According to M.S. Mason, Plutarch does not fulfill his role as an objective historian and deliberately vilifies the character of Cleopatra (Mason). It is almost a completely negative portrayal of the Egyptian queen. She is referred to as a â€Å"charmer† (Waterfield 343) with â€Å"devastating effects on Caesar† (514). Her â€Å"eloquence [and] argumentative cunning† (382) are described as a means of drugging and bewitching her men (392). Plutarch describes one situation when Cleopatra is afraid of Octavia’s political power and she goes about weeping and starving herself to manipulate... ...the Egyptian queen, it can be found in the character that emerges in Antony and Cleopatra. Essay “Cyclopes Are Hospitable Creatures” or Adventures of Odyssey

It may be somewhat strange for a modern person to see hospitality to be treated as a separate, distinctive and infinitely important theme when it comes to discussing The Odyssey and other ancient texts. Yes, we all know that being hospitable is considered a good form, that it is a sign of politeness and that hospitable people are generally better liked than their opposites – it is just that hospitality, with all its positive connotations, isn’t all that important. It is not a matter of life and death. If you don’t like strangers in your home, it is your own business – it is not something to be condemned and deserving of punishment. Yet Homer (if such a person actually existed) lived in a completely different era. Human settlements were few and far between. Road from one town to another was long, arduous and often mortally dangerous. Communication between distant lands was weak, primitive and erratic, which meant that travelers were often the only source of news and stories about faraway locations. People living in their familiar surroundings were extremely vulnerable – and the law or custom of hospitality was the only thing that served as their protection away from home. Whether you followed or not followed this law was one of the most important things that differentiated a civilized person from a barbarian – if you were kind to strangers, strangers were more likely to visit you again, bringing news and goods to trade. And you were more likely to be paid in kind in case you ever got far away from home yourself. This is why hospitality is treated with that great an attention in The Odyssey, which is seen especially clearly in case of Polyphemus, the Cyclops in whose cave Odyssey and his companions stopped to pass a night. Polyphemus doesn’t simply break the law of hospitality – he openly and smugly dismisses it and scoffs at the gods who enforce it. It is only logical that Polyphemus is described as a beastly thing closer to wild animals than to people – he is not simply barbaric, he is subhuman. In fact, if you take a closer look, it is his impious behavior and lack of respect towards the law of hospitality that is most frowned upon in The Odyssey and not his cruel treatment of Odyssey and his men per se. The world described by Homer shows no lack of grisly murders, and Polyphemus killing and eating several men falls short even of some things done by Odyssey himself (let’s not forget that he was instrumental in capture of Troy and subsequent slaughter of its inhabitants, for example). It is this impiety that brings Polyphemus to the brutal punishment at the hands of Odysseus, not the murder. And the status of hospitality in the society of that time makes sure that readers unanimously agree that this punishment is sanctioned by gods and not just an act of a man angry at somebody who killed his friends – which serves as an excellent example of values dissonance between now and then.

Postmodernism Essay Example In recent years, multiculturalism, tolerance and political correctness have been integrated into how American society thinks. America seems to be trying to learn more about the ingredients of her melting pot. These efforts can be best understood by examining post-modernism. Post-modernism is especially important to breaking down stereotypes such as those that exist surrounding the black family. To understand post-modernism we must first understand modernism. Modernism is the philosophy that began with the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was an era when science and art flourished. European society used the Enlightenment to object to the oppression of the church. This era emphasized only those things that are observable or measurable (Smith, 1995). The scientific method developed at this time became the standard to which everything is measured. Modernism, although moving away from the confinements of religion, was limiting in its own way. Post-modernism can be viewed as an expansion of modernism. It does not limit the idea of truth to only that which can be observed. Post-modernism is all encompassing. Post-modernism does not allow for only one definition for anything. There are several explanations for phenomena. Where modernism emphasizes racial classifications, post-modernism emphasizes cultural and ethnic classifications. Post-modernism sanctions differences from family to family and person to person within the parameters of one culture. This multiculturalism is being used to educate from primary education through higher education. In Percival and Blacks study with sixth-graders and multiculturalism, they realized that, although they were examining a specific Native American tribe, stereotypes of that tribe or people can develop (2000). For example, all African Americans from the South eat collard greens and corn bread. So, educating oneself about other cultures cannot be used to generalize to the entire group. Post-modernism is, thus, very important to understanding the concept of a black family. Post-modernism reveals that circumstances cannot be explained in one way. Modernism has clear procedures and criteria for defining phenomena. The question of truth is determined by science. Scientists control the worldview or meta-narrative of the dominant group (Western society). Much of the way current societies view the world is dominated by Western culture. The meta-narrative for the black family is defined by the Western standards: income and education and any other quantifiable unit. The history of the black family is difficult to research according to Barnetta McGhee White because there are few written documents to substantiate the oral history (Staples, 1991 p.50). In terms of the prevailing meta-narrative, familial ties must be documented by family trees. Black families, due to the breakdown of the family through the slave trade, rely on oral history to tell the story of their lineage (Staples, 1991, p 51). The genealogy of author Barnetta McGhee White helps illustrate certa in points. The first is that since a majority of the research into genealogy is dependent on written documents dating into the founding years of this nation, these documents are only telling what the writer wants the reader to know. The history of black families is told through the story of the slaveholder and, thus, gives information relevant to the business of slaveryeverything that measurable. Another point is that those in power in the past control the future. If current society is viewed in chronicled terms, there is little control blacks can have over the account of their family history because it will always be in terms of the dominant meta-narrative based on modernity. The conclusion to be made by the former points is that modern thought is to blame for stereotypes against blacks. Postmodern theory also helps us to understand while according to the Census definition of family blacks have a higher percentage of families of four or more people with female householders, the assumption that that black mothers are solely taking care of large families is false. The reason for the five percent difference between black and white families headed by females cannot be taken at face value (Census 2000). The female may live with other adults who contribute resources to the family. Furthermore, the householder may be providing in contract only; she signed the lease, deed or mortgage but does not live there and provide the everyday (other that pecuniary) support. Other factors weigh heavily in understanding the plight of blacks. Two correlated elements, which affect blacks, are income and educat ion. The percentage of black families in poverty in 1990 was eleven percent higher than that of white families, which was eight percent (Census Statistical Brief, 1993). It is not surprising that thirteen percent more whites were college graduates that same year (ibid). The difference dropped to twelve percent for the year 2000twenty-eight percent of whites were college graduates and sixteen percent of blacks were college graduates (Census 2000). These two factors are important because one of the meta-narratives in America stresses making as much money as possible. In order to make money, you must have an education. In order to receive the higher education needed for better employment, you need money. The idea of this cycle does not permit blacks to succeed according to the standards of this particular meta-narrative. However, there are black families who succeed by these standards through various means such as community help, financial aid and their own volition. Some families would not rate success according to income or education. Post-modernism allows different reasons and ideas to determine the truth.
